Today is April 28. On this important day in 1926, literary history was made. "To Kill a Mockingbird" author Harper Lee was born.
Literary agents warn writers not to forget their manners because "it's a small world and word gets around."
I didn't realize how small the literary world really was until I recently wrote a post about books/authors who have influenced me.
While the list was written as part of a blog chain, I view each author I listed on that blog -- from Dr. Seuss to Katherine Patterson -- as a celebrity.
I mean, wow! These really are some fantastic books, fantastic authors. In my book (pardon the pun), these folks really shaped my view of the written word.
So, imagine my surprise -- scratch that, it was shock, utter shock -- when one of those authors commented on the post, thanking me for including her.
After I pulled myself up from the floor, I called my daughter over to the computer to make sure I wasn't just seeing things.
Nope. I wasn't.
Molly confirmed "Watching the Tree Limbs" author Mary DeMuth had left a comment.
Now, although I'm "friends" with her on Facebook, I'm pretty sure Mary DeMuth is not a regular lurker here.
I'm not sure how she found out her name was on my list, but I believe it serves as a great reminder and proof that it really is a small world afterall. (I can say that without getting into trouble with Disney, right?)
Anyway, thank you, Mary, for making my day. Your comment was a blessing.

That is so awesome Kat. I has happened to me as well a couple of times...and WOW...It really is a small world!
As a result of a few experiences like yours, I think nothing of getting in touch with authors. (If I have a valid reason for it.) For example, when I was teaching a Christian lifestyle book, I just Googled the author and emailed him to get his advice. LOVE the internet. (I'm not saying this would work with Joel Osteen or Max Lucado, but with those of us living in less rarefied air, there's no reason not to give it a try.)
SWEET! It's so true. Small world! I get a google alert each time my blog is linked in another blog, so I usually visit those sites too.
I've met some pretty sweet people that way.
Camy Tang and Michelle Sutton have done that on my blog too after I'd linked them in a post. I almost fell over dead too, so I know how you feel. :-)
Some day once your novel is published, aspiring novelists will be doing the same when you comment, girl.

I met Mary at a Christian writer's conference in Philadelphia. Her writing is amazing and she's a wonderful person. She was very encouraging in her critique of my work while pointing out weak spots right away.
I was super-impressed with her. :) How cool that she visited your blog!
