Hypothetical: If you were auditioning for American Idol...

Get ready.

I'm about to state the obvious.

When I was little, I wanted to be a rock star.

I dreamed of the day I'd be old enough to stand on a stage, sing my heart out to a crowd of adoring fans.

Of course, my parents dismissed that dream, but I sang in a band long enough to tell you that I'd rather jab my eardrums out with ice picks before listening to certain songs again.

After seeing the number of people who audition for American Idol, I believe I'm not the only person who has dreamed of rock 'n' roll greatness.

Unfortunately, I'm too old to try out. But I often wonder whether or not I'd make it to Hollywood, baby.

I found myself wondering this again as I cleaned the house on Saturday, belting out the verses of "Hair of the Dog" at the top of my lungs. (BTW: Broom handles make good make-believe microphones.)

I started thinking (quite arrogantly, might I add), "I would so knock Simon Cowell on his butt with my rendition of this song."

Then I thought, "No, this isn't the song I'd use to audition. I'd use..."

There are so many good songs out there, so many different genres of music, so many different styles of voice, what would I choose?

That really started my gears turning: What song would others pick for their audition? What would you pick?

Now don't be telling me you can't sing. Everyone has a song they like to belt out when they're all alone (in the car, in the shower).

So tell me: If you were auditioning for American Idol, which song would you sing?

Come back on Thursday and I'll tell you what I decided.

Hmmm... I don't know. But maybe that one from Shrek. I can't remember the name of it, but it was on that celebrity concert the other night. Hallelujah? Does that sound right? I love that song. LOVE IT.

Well, first, I would NEVER subject ANYONE to my singing. It's bad. Really and truly. I pretty much lip-sync "Happy Birthday." :P

As for picking a song, IF I could sing, that would be nearly impossible. But, to reflect my life lately, I'd probably pick "Feel So Different" by Sinead O'Connor.

I DO love to sing. I also sometimes play my guitar. AND I too played in a band and sang in the younger days.

I would either sing Chasing Pavement by Adele OR Mercy by Duffy.

I love different songs, ones not overdone. I would use Queen Bee Baby by Barbra Striesand on the the soundtrack from A Star is Born. Okay, I've thought about this one LOL
What a fun post!!!!

Anon -- I'd pay to see the looks on the judges' faces if you sang that.

Elana -- The Smashmouth song "Rock Star" or the Monkees' remake of "I'm a Believer?"

Kat -- It's like I told my cousin: The "I can't sing" excuse doesn't work here because neither can some of those audition for AI. :-) I don't know that particular song, but I love the clarity of Sinead's voice.

JW -- That's so cool! What kind of band? What kind of guitar? Acoustic? Electric? Bass? Fender? Charvel? Gibson?

KM -- Ooooh...Streisand. OK, that has me thinking now. I had my mind made up, but now you've mentioned "A Star is Born" and I've started thinking about other music movies. Of course Bette Midler pops into my head.

Too many good songs. Too little time.

I've actually thought about this a lot because, honestly, performing is my first love and I miss it so much! I would do something fast and sassy because that's just me. The problem is narrowing it down from there. There are a lot of great contemporary country songs, but I have a lyric/coloratura voice type (Yeah, that's my geeky opera studies side shining through) so I'm thinking Mariah Carey's "Someday" would showcase my voice well. It's kind of old though. Hmm... I don't know. Sorry for the ramble. lol

I woke up this morning thinking about ZZ Top's "Looking for Some Tush". What made me think of that obnoxious song I have no idea. But if I auditioning for American Idol I'm going to have to go with "Tush". I don't think I've ever heard anybody on there do that one and it's bizarre enough to have fun with.
